With a long history of bringing top-level defensive import players from the United States, Rovaniemi Nordmen head coach Stan Bedwell continues that tradition this summer with the signing of defensive back Andrew Williamson from the Indianapolis Colts (NFL) and Vanderbilt University (NCAA D1).

Williamson (185 cm, 96 kg) was a two-year starter for the Commodores, playing in the highly-touted Southeastern Conference (SEC) that includes college football powerhouse programs like Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and Florida. During his time there, he contributed 135 tackles, 6 tackles-for-loss, 7 pass deflections, 2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumble, 1 sack, and 1 blocked punt in his career. He recorded a high of 8 tackles against the University of Kentucky in 2014 and the most notable highlight of his career was a 38-yard interception return in Vanderbilt’s win over the University of Florida in 2014, snapping a 22-game losing streak against the Gators.

Williamson had 6 tackles, a pass deflection and a forced fumble against Houston in 2016.

After his senior season, he collected 3 tackles in the prestigious East/West Shrine Bowl, an all-star game for the top seniors in college football. He then signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL in the spring of 2016 after an impressive pro day in which he ran a 4.48 40-yard dash, record a 35 inch (89 cm) vertical jump, and a 10-foot-4 (315 cm) broad jump. He missed the 2016 season due to a knee injury, but returned to the field in 2017 where he participated in all four pre-season games recording 12 tackles for the Colts. His best outing was a 4 tackle performance against the Detroit Lions, tied for 2nd most on the team behind veteran Barkevious Mingo.

Williamson recorded 4 tackles against the Detroit Lions in 2017.

In addition to playing defensive back for the Nordmen, Williamson will also hold the role of defensive coordinator this summer. His experience at the highest levels of American football will surely enhance the team’s level of play on the field, while increasing the knowledge of his teammates off the field. Outside of football, Andrew is securing his master’s degree to go into the teaching field and is heavily involved in non-profit organizations for disadvantaged youth. Bedwell speaks about what Williamson brings to his team:

“On the field, Andrew’s resume speaks for itself. Not only did he excel at the highest level of college football, he also spent two years in the NFL and proved that he could hold his own among the best players in the world. What stood out most about Andrew through our communications was his character.
He understands what he is getting into and he’s coming here for all the right reasons. He wants to help build a football culture within our club and the city of Rovaniemi. Our defense will be in good hands with Andrew and he’ll be a great spokesperson for our team and for the sport.”
