Game Report: Nordmen vs. Falcons

Torrential rains and cold winds were not enough to help the Hyvinkää Falcons on Saturday, June 29th against the Rovaniemi Nordmen; as the Warriors of the Four Winds improved to 3-0 on the season with a 35-13 victory at Susivouti.

Pre-game weather forecasts proved to be accurate with periods of heavy rain and wind wreaking havoc on game conditions. The first quarter saw both teams experience great difficulty moving the ball on offense; with the score sitting at 0-0 after the first intermission.

The sky opened up and the sun came out just long enough for the Nordmen offense to capitalize on the improved conditions, and they did not wait long at all to do so. Rovaniemi opened up the scoring with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Rafael Pineda to Hannes Harju, to draw first blood; while Tomi Väänänen‘s PAT was good to make the score 7-0. Less than three minutes later, Pineda connected with Alfonso Ikäheimo on a 15-yard TD, followed by another Väänänen PAT, to make the score 14-0. A quick turnover forced by the defense, led to yet another Nordmen score in the span of only about 7 minutes with Pineda finding Harju again. Väänänen‘s PAT was good, giving the Nordmen a quick 21-0 lead. Joonas Alakoski caught a touchdown at the end of the first half on a freak play for Hyvinkää to cut into the Nordmen lead just before halftime, and with the good PAT, made the score 21-7 at the break.

Hyvinkää came out strong in the second half with Osku Karttunen catching a touchdown, but the Falcons had their PAT blocked, making the score 21-13. The rain stopped and the sun came out just in time for the Nordmen offense to get back to business with Pineda scoring another touchdown, this time on the ground from just outside the goal line, and Väänänen‘s PAT doinked off the uprights, but fell in to make the score 28-13. After another strong defensive stop, the Nordmen offense were back on the attack. On a 2nd & 8, Kaarle Silander took the hand-off from Pineda at the 46-yard line, dashed along the right sideline, cutting back twice and avoiding at least six tackles to score his second touchdown of the season. Väänänen was perfect on the day going 5 for 5 on PATs and notching the final score at 35-13.

The Nordmen defense was impressive on the day, recording three turnovers in total, as well as registering a tremendous number of sacks. Turnovers included a fumble recovery by Petri Korhonen, an interception by Tomi Väänänen and another interception by game MVP, Roni Laine.

Through three games, the Nordmen have scored 123 points while allowing only 25, for a point differential of +98. No other team in the entire 2nd division has had even as close to the offensive output and efficiency that the Nordmen have had, and things are just getting started for the Warriors of the Four Winds. Currently atop the group 1 standings in the 2nd division, Rovaniemi will have a bye week next weekend and will have their next home game against the Oulu Northern Lights on Saturday, July 13th at Susivouti, with kickoff happening at 5pm.

Fun Facts:

The Nordmen are riding an 12-game winning streak that goes back to the start of last season. During that stretch, Rovaniemi has outscored their opponents by a total of 347 – 87 and haven’t trailed at halftime in a game since June 30th, 2018 during their game against the Sipoo Bulldogs at Susivouti.
